Frequently Asked Questions:
Why was my student placed in Honors 7th grade ELA?
Although students with high scores on 6th grade CRT tests were recommended for this class, all upcoming 7th grade students had the option to choose to be in Honors 7th grade ELA.
How will teaming work with Honors 7th grade ELA?
There are three 7th grade teams of students. Each team has two Honors 7th grade ELA classes as well as three regular 7th grade ELA classes. There may be minor differences between Honors classes based on team projects and teacher discretion, but the rigor and overall unit requirements of the Honors curriculum will be the same across teams.
How will Honors 7th grade ELA be similar to regular 7th grade ELA?
These two classes will have common units of study that are based on the same Common Core standards as set by the Canyons School District. Three of these units have common assessments that are set by the district for all 7th grade students. We will also be implementing a new vocabulary program this year that will be common to both classes.
How will Honors 7th grade ELA be different than regular 7th grade ELA?
The main difference between regular 7th ELA and Honors 7th ELA is in depth of instruction, not speed. Honors 7th ELA students should expect to go further into each unit of study and learn unit concepts and skills at a higher level. In order to reach this rigorous level of study, students will naturally have a higher workload than regular 7th ELA classes. Students should plan on completing high quality work in class as well as at home.
